Lyrics - Wednesday
Due to its position in the week, Wednesday in this song represents the portion of a lifetime spent bringing up children. None of my children had left home when I wrote this, but I had so often heard parents say of their grown-up offspring that it only seemed like yesterday that they were babes in arms. The image of the "passing tram" refers to the Bradford trams which are now extinct, though I'm told some of the steel tram lines are still buried under the tarmac roads.

Mother with baby Wednesday

It's sad about Wednesday -
a time that came, a time that went;
the light was just reflected
from the windows of a passing tram.

Wednesday came and Wednesday's gone.
Steel is buried under stone,
tar is melting in the sun,
the young ones grown.

Sad about Wednesday,
the time was here the time is gone.
The young ones don't need us,
they'll have Wednesday of their own.

Wednesday morning you give birth to a child
as the day begins its dawn.
You're feeling happy but you can sense some pain
when you see just how fast he's grown.

Sad about Wednesday...

And at mid-day the road that seemed so long -
you find its end is twisting into sight.
You try to teach him all the things that you know
while the sun is glowing full and bright.

Sad about Wednesday...

The afternoon is throwing shadows long;
you find he's spending far more time away
and as the evening pulls you in to rest
you see him going to another day.

Sad about Wednesday...

Wednesday came and Wednesday's gone.
Steel is buried under stone,
tar is melting in the sun,
the young ones grown.

Sad about Wednesday -
a time that came, a time that went;
the light was just reflected
from the windows of a tram that's gone.
